Stand-up Jon Richardson, with special guest Phill Jupitus, talks about the moments that shaped him and set him on the path to comedy.
Jon Richardson is at Assembly Roxy on Sunday 18 October, talking through his memoir The Teenage Diaries of a Stand-Up Comedian. He'll be joined by special guest Phill Jupitus, so it's a conversation rather than a solo set. The show runs from 1:00pm to 2:30pm, and tickets are £36.25.
The book is a look back at his younger self, growing up in an era when Oasis dominated the charts and Baywatch dominated his imagination. He revisits the moments that shaped him and set him on the path to comedy, and the stories lean into the awkwardness of being a teenager. He talks about embarrassing misadventures, like a mortifying PE lesson involving a climbing rope, and the smaller, oddly specific triumphs, such as earning a pack of Chewits for the cleanest tent at scout camp.
If you only know him from the telly, there's a bit of a career to catch up on. Richardson is a critically acclaimed comedian, actor and father, and he picked up a Chortle Award for best breakthrough act in 2008 and an Edinburgh Fringe nomination. These days he's a team captain on Channel 4's 8 Out Of 10 Cats Does Countdown. Critics have described him as a gentle and ever-smiling anecdotalist, and one of the more individual and interesting stand-ups working. The book itself has been called whip-smart comedy and a wildly funny whinge of volcanic frustrations, which gives you a fair idea of the tone he brings to the stage.
