Free conversation chaired by David Patterson with Duncan Macmillan and Kenneth Dingwall, staged around the retrospective 'Kenneth Dingwall: Being'.
David Patterson, Duncan Macmillan and Kenneth Dingwall are sitting down for a talk at the City Art Centre on Thursday 3 December, from 2pm to 3.30pm. It's part of Kenneth Dingwall: Being, a major retrospective of the Edinburgh-based artist that brings together more than 70 abstract drawings, paintings, prints and constructions from public and private collections across the UK. The exhibition includes works from Dingwall's own studio that have never been shown before, so it's a good chance to see a substantial body of his work in one place.
The conversation is chaired by David Patterson, the former curator of the City Art Centre, and it centres on the relatively slow development of the 'extremes' of Modernism in Scotland. That's a broad subject, but the talk frames it against the dynamic beginnings of the Glasgow Boys and the Group of Four who formed around Charles Rennie Mackintosh. If you've spent any time with Scottish art history, those names are the usual starting point, so this is a look at what happened in the years that followed.
