Blues night with Dutch singer and guitarist Hans Theessink, supported by Tom Rhodes, at The Voodoo Rooms.
Hans Theessink plays The Voodoo Rooms on Monday 19 October, with support from Tom Rhodes. It's a night of blues in the heart of the city, and the bill brings together two very different generations of the genre.
Theessink is a Dutch singer and guitarist who's been playing since the early 1970s, so he's drawing on more than five decades of blues, roots and Americana. He's played over 8,000 shows worldwide and worked with Ry Cooder, Dolly Parton, The Blind Boys of Alabama and Richard Thompson. He's known for a rich baritone, soulful slide guitar and masterful fingerpicking, and his style blends country blues and fingerpicking with Big Bill Broonzy, Leadbelly and Brownie McGhee among his influences. The legendary Bo Diddley once described him as 'one helluva guitar player'.
Support comes from Tom Rhodes, one of the most exciting young talents emerging from the north-east blues scene, who plays a mix of original songs and classic blues. Between the two, you'll hear a wide stretch of the tradition: Theessink's long-running career and the older names he draws on, and Rhodes' newer material alongside the classics.
