Patrick Grant, presenter of The Great British Sewing Bee, talks about craftsmanship, the fashion industry and the joy of making things that last, followed by a Q&A.
Patrick Grant is bringing his show Hand Made Man to the Assembly Rooms on Sunday 21 March 2027. Most of us know him as the face of The Great British Sewing Bee, but this is a proper evening with him on stage rather than a TV episode. He takes the audience behind the scenes of the show's workroom and through Savile Row to look at what it means to craft and be creative in today's world.
Grant talks about his time on television, the biggest triumphs and the last-minute disasters that come with making things that last, and makes a case for why our relationship with clothing has gone wrong. He brings the numbers to back it up: around 100 billion garments produced every year, a third of them never worn, and the equivalent of a bin-lorry full of clothes burned or buried every second. He describes his argument as personal, economic and quietly radical, and asks what gets lost when price becomes the only measure of value. It's not a nostalgic look back, but a question about how we value things that are made by hand.

The show is part of his tour and closes with a Q&A celebrating the joy of craftsmanship, so there's a chance to put your own questions to him. It runs from 14:00 to 19:30 at the Assembly Rooms, 54 George Street, Edinburgh EH2 2LR, and tickets start from £33.90 including all fees.
