Georgie Jones mixes stand-up and spoken word to explore the ups and downs of her life in a new show.
Georgie Jones brings her show More Ups Than Downs to the Assembly Roxy on Friday 30 April. It's a full hour that sits somewhere between spoken word and stand-up, with a bit of oversharing thrown in for good measure. She's built a reputation for a formidable stage presence and a compelling way with words, and this is the show that puts them to work.
The whole thing is built around a simple, self-described 'scientific' system: she's sorted her entire existence into two categories, Ups and Downs. From there, the hour works its way through the ups, the downs, the ups that turn into downs, the downs that turn out to be ups, and the ups that only ever make it halfway up. It's a bit of a loop, and the comedy comes from watching her trace the lines between them.
If you're not familiar with her, the mix of spoken word and stand-up is exactly what it sounds like: the storytelling of the former with the punchlines of the latter, and the oversharing acting as the glue. It's less about a series of separate jokes and more about a single, hour-long thread she pulls on until the whole thing unravels.
