Dr Orna Guralnik, clinical psychologist and star of 'Couples Therapy', explores relationships from her new book 'Couples: On Loving Another' and takes questions from the audience.
Dr Orna Guralnik is coming to the Assembly Rooms on Saturday 27 February 2027, starting at 7:30pm. If you've followed the docuseries Couples Therapy, you'll recognise her as the clinical psychologist and psychoanalyst at its centre — the show is now into its fifth season.
Much of the evening will be built around her new book, Couples: On Loving Another, and the decades she's spent working in the consulting room. She talks about the hidden architecture of our closest relationships, and the idea that the arguments couples have — over sex, money, parenting, or who does the washing up — are rarely about those things at all. Instead, she argues they're about our childhoods, our traumas, and the cultural scripts we inherit. She'll walk the audience through the process of psychoanalytic listening she uses to help couples break the patterns they re-enact again and again, and frames the central crisis of every relationship — 'your partner is not you' — as its greatest gift.
Michael Cunningham, the Pulitzer Prize author of The Hours, called Couples required reading for everyone who's been in love, who's in love now, or who hopes to fall in love. The evening includes a chance to ask her questions, so it's not just a talk — you can put your own things to her.
