Reading of Mikhail Bulgakov's 'A Dog's Heart' at The Amber Rose in Edinburgh.
The Amber Rose is hosting a reading of Mikhail Bulgakov's A Dog's Heart this Tuesday, 27 October, starting at 18:30. It's a public reading of the novella, so you'll be hearing the story read aloud rather than reading through it on your own.
If you're not familiar with the book, A Dog's Heart is one of Bulgakov's most famous satires. It's a dark comedy set in Soviet Russia, centred on a surgeon who performs a transplant that turns a stray dog into a man. From there, the story becomes a sharp, often absurd look at the new Soviet society and the people trying to mould it into something it isn't. It's a short novella, so it's a manageable one to hear in a single sitting.
Hearing it read aloud changes the experience a bit. Bulgakov's dialogue has a particular rhythm to it, and the more surreal moments land differently when they're spoken. It's the kind of thing that works well in a room with other people, where you can hear everyone's reaction to the more outrageous turns the plot takes.
