Regular musical theatre night of the Cambridge University Musical Theatre Society, with a different theme each evening, a standing microphone and a piano.
CUMTS Bar Nights are back at the ADC Bar on Monday 19 October, the first of the Cambridge University Musical Theatre Society's regular musical theatre nights this term. They run two or three times a term, and they're a different beast from the society's full-scale productions: instead of a big stage, it's just a standing microphone and a piano.
Each night is built around a different theme, and the cast is chosen by auditioning a song the week before, so every performance brings a new group of singers. Past themes have ranged from 'Roles I'd never play', with iconic characters gender-swapped, to 'Writer and Composer speed dating'. The night is as much about the audience as the singing, and the room is kept deliberately friendly and supportive — a place where less confident performers can find their feet before moving on to principal roles in the society's larger shows.
It's a low-stakes, stripped-back way to hear musical theatre, and because the cast changes every time, no two nights are the same. The ADC Bar is a small space, so you're close to the action rather than watching from the back of a theatre.
