Screening of Frank Berry's drama about the history of an institution for unmarried mothers and their children in rural Ireland, based on a true story.
The Lost Children Of Tuam opens at MAC Birmingham on Sunday 1 November, with screenings running through to Wednesday 4 November. It's a drama based on a true story, and it's the kind of thing that stays with you long after the credits roll.
The film follows Catherine Corless, an amateur historian who starts digging into a former institution for unmarried mothers and their children in rural Ireland. What she finds is a shocking hidden history of neglect and loss, and when she's met with a deafening silence from both church and state, she launches a campaign for justice. It's set in Tuam, Co. Galway, and it deals with deep wounds that still shape Ireland today.
BAFTA winner Monica Dolan takes the lead as Corless — you might recognise her from Mr Bates vs The Post Office — and she's joined by Andrew Bennett and Ian McElhinney. The film is directed by Frank Berry, with a screenplay by Rebecca Lenkiewicz. It's rated 12A and runs for 1 hour 39 minutes, so it's a fairly tight watch that doesn't overstay its welcome.
