Improvisation workshop led by Jonathan Pitts on 'The Cutting Room', a fast-paced form of improv combining short-form and long-form styles.
Jonathan Pitts is running a workshop on The Cutting Room at MAC Birmingham on Saturday 7 November, from 2:00pm for three hours. It's a session for improvisers, not a show for an audience, and it's aimed at people who've had at least six months of improv training and experience.
The Cutting Room is a fast-paced, fantastical, wild roller-coaster form of improv that blends short-form and long-form styles. It was created by Scotland's Peter Aitchson, and Pitts picked it up in 2018 while playing as a guest for Aitchson's team at the Edinburgh Fringe, where he performed 21 shows in 19 days. If you've spent any time in the improv scene, you'll know the difference between the two: short-form is the quick-fire, game-based stuff, while long-form lets scenes stretch out and build on one another. The Cutting Room pulls from both.
Pitts brings a fair bit of weight to the room. He's an award-winning international improviser and storyteller who's taught and performed in more than 30 countries and 110 cities. He co-founded the Chicago Improv Festival and produced or co-produced it throughout its entire 20-year run, and he taught at The Second City for 16 years. He was also a member of 'Stone Soup', one of iO's first house teams, and the 2024 book 50 Key Improv Performers by Matt Fotis lists him at number 24. It's a good chance to get a proper look at a form he's been working with since that 2018 Fringe run.
