Drop-in science sessions led by Youth Evolution that reveal the science behind magic with a giant interactive bubble shield and hands-on activities.
Youth Evolution are taking over Thinktank on Wednesday 28 October, bringing a session called Wizard Bubble Shields to the Birmingham Science Museum. It's part of the half-term activities running across the city, and it's built around the kind of science that looks like a magic trick until you see how it actually works.
The main event is the Wizard's bubble shield, a giant interactive bubble that you actually step inside. It surrounds you in a shimmering wall of soap film, and while you're in there, the team explains the science of surface tension, soap molecules, colours and shapes. It's a hands-on way of seeing how a bubble holds together and why it behaves the way it does, rather than just watching it from the side.
From there, the session moves into demonstrations and activities you can do yourself. One of them is Floating Spell Scrolls, where drawings and symbols appear to float away. The whole thing is led by a team of STEM experts from Youth Evolution, so there's someone on hand to talk through the physics behind the bubbles and the scrolls if you're curious about the 'how' as well as the 'what'.

It's an indoor session, open to all ages, though a parent needs to stay with their children. There are two drop-in slots on the day: 11:00am to 1:00pm and 2:00pm to 4:00pm, so you can pick whichever fits your half-term plans. It's included in admission to Thinktank, which is on Curzon Street in the city centre.
