Free, family-friendly drop-in workshop with a live demonstration by professional bird taxidermist Sarah Burhouse.
Sarah Burhouse is bringing her taxidermy work to the Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery on Monday 26 October, starting at 11:00. It's a family-friendly drop-in session, so you can just turn up when it suits you rather than booking a slot.
The session kicks off with a live demonstration by Burhouse, a professional bird taxidermist. She'll be walking through the traditional craft of bird taxidermy, showing how a prepared bird skin is transformed, stage by stage, into a lifelike specimen. The skin is processed and cleaned before the workshop, and all the birds are ethically sourced. It's a good chance to see the actual steps involved in a craft that usually happens behind closed doors.
Because it's a drop-in format, you don't have to stay for the whole thing if you're just passing through, and questions are welcome throughout, so you can ask as she goes. It's part of the wider programme of workshops Birmingham Museums has running, and it's aimed at all ages, so it works as a family outing as much as something to do on your own.
