Festive lift-the-flap puppet show with songs and characters from the Acorn Wood stories by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler, suitable for all ages.
Tales from Acorn Wood At Christmas runs at the Midlands Arts Centre from Tuesday 1 December to Sunday 27 December, a nearly month-long stretch that puts it right in the middle of the festive season. It's a Norwell Lapley Productions adaptation of the Acorn Wood stories by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler, the duo behind The Gruffalo, so the characters will be familiar if you've spent any time reading with little ones.
The show brings those stories to the stage as a lift-the-flap experience, which is a nice way of saying it's built for kids to follow along with. It's packed with toe-tapping songs and puppetry, and the hour-long run is short enough to hold a young child's attention without pushing it. You'll follow the wood's usual crowd: poor old Fox, who's lost his socks; Rabbit, kept awake by a persistent rat-a-tat-tat; and Postman Bear. For this Christmas run, they've added the festive tale of Squirrel's Snowman into the mix.
It's aimed at all ages, from 18 months up to six and beyond, so it works as a first trip to the theatre for the very small as well as a family outing. The production is based on the books published by Macmillan Children's Books, and there are relaxed and BSL performances available if you need them. The MAC is in Cannon Hill Park, B12 9QH, and with the run stretching from early December through to the 27th, you've got plenty of dates to choose from before the Christmas break.
