4K screening of Hammer's 1958 'Dracula', restored with previously missing footage, preceded by a short film on the restoration and an introduction by John Gore.
MAC Birmingham is screening Dracula - The Cut They Tried To Bury on Sunday 1 November, a 4K restoration of the 1958 Hammer Films classic. The film runs an hour and 48 minutes, and it's preceded by a short film exploring the restoration itself, with an introduction from John Gore. If you've seen the movie before, this isn't just a cleaner version of the same thing.
Back in 1958, Hammer Films changed horror cinema with this version of Dracula, but the cut that made it to UK and US screens wasn't the full story. This restoration brings back footage that was deemed too shocking for audiences at the time and was cut from the Western release. For more than six decades, those scenes were believed lost, only ever seen during the film's original 1958 Japanese theatrical run. Hammer Films and Silver Salt Restoration worked with Warner Bros to track down the best original archival materials from around the world and put them back where they belong. It's the version the censors tried to bury, finally uncensored.
