Comedy workshop led by improv duo Kathleen and Joseph Rinaldi on blending scripted acting techniques with improvisation.
Kathleen Rinaldi and Joseph Rinaldi are running a comedy workshop, Scripted Tools, Unscripted Play, at MAC Birmingham on Saturday 7 November. It's a three-hour session, so you'll want to clear a good chunk of your afternoon for it.
The workshop draws on the signature style of ImprompTwo, the internationally acclaimed improv duo the Rinaldis founded together. The whole thing is built around the overlap between scripted acting techniques and improvisational theatre, and it's aimed at showing improvisers how to build scenes that feel fully written in the moment. If you've ever felt like your improv scenes are a bit thin or just drifting, that's exactly what this is meant to address.
It helps to know who's leading it. Kathleen Rinaldi is a professional playwright whose work has been produced in Toronto, New York and Florida, and she co-founded Unconsciously Coupled, a company dedicated to integrating scripted and improvised performance. Joseph Rinaldi is a seasoned SAG/AFTRA/AEA actor and a founding member of Come What Will, the duo's Shakespearean improv project, as well as of Firedrake Productions, of which he was producer and artistic director in New York City. Between them, they've worked across playwrighting, professional acting and improv, so they're coming at this from a few different angles at once.
