National Theatre Live screening of Sam Yates' production of Clifford Odets' play 'Golden Boy', starring Josh O'Connor and with a live string quartet.
NT Live: Golden Boy comes to The Studio on Saturday 16 January, a cinema screening of the National Theatre's production of Clifford Odets' play. It was filmed live at the Almeida Theatre, so you're seeing the full stage performance rather than a filmed adaptation. Josh O'Connor — known from The Crown and Challengers — leads the cast, and the production is directed by Olivier Award winner Sam Yates.
Odets' play is set in 1930s New York at the height of the Depression. It follows Joe Bonaparte, a gifted young violinist who gets drawn into the brutal world of professional boxing, and the story sits right in that tension between the two — the music he's leaving behind and the fighting he's moving into. The production includes a live string quartet, which brings the violin side of the story to the front of the room.
