A world premiere stage adaptation of Henry James' ghost story, directed by Nicky Allpress, exploring psychological suspense and theatricality.
The Turn of the Screw opens at The Studio on Thursday 29 October, running through to Saturday 31 October. It's a world premiere stage adaptation of Henry James' ghost story, written by Morgan Lloyd Malcolm and directed by Nicky Allpress, brought to the Birmingham Rep by Blackeyed Theatre and Arcola Theatre.
If the title doesn't ring a bell, you'll likely know the story it inspired: Susan Hill's The Woman in Black takes its cue from this one. The production leans into the original's psychological suspense, illusion and theatricality, and runs for about two hours and ten minutes including an interval. It's got a 12+ age guidance, so it's not one for the very young.
The cast is a small one, with several actors taking on multiple roles. Toby Benyon plays Miles and Quint; Jim Fish is the man and the master; Kathleen McAuley Irvine takes on Flora and Jessel; Janita Mikkola is in the ensemble; Katy Slater plays Mrs Grose; and Amy Tara is the governess. With that many roles shared across six people, you'll see the cast shifting in and out of character as the story unfolds.
