Free, drop-in Sunday hands-on creative workshop for all ages, with a different activity each week inspired by the museum's galleries.
Marvellous Makers is a weekly creative session at Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery, running every Sunday from 11am to 3pm. It turns a corner of the museum into a buzzing creative space where you can drop in and get stuck into a different hands-on activity every week, with each one drawing inspiration from the galleries and exhibitions hanging around you. The sessions are free, open to all ages, and require no booking, so you can just turn up when it suits you.
The whole point is to make something and then go find what sparked it. Once you've finished your own masterpiece, you're encouraged to wander the museum and track down the specific piece of art or object that inspired the activity. It's a nice way to see the collections with a bit more purpose, rather than just drifting through the rooms.
Because the activity changes every week, it's something you can come back to without it feeling like the same old thing. One Sunday might be about painting, the next something completely different, and since it's open to all ages, it works as well for a solo visit as it does for a family morning out. You don't need to be an artist to join in, either — it's more about getting your hands dirty and having a go than producing a gallery-ready piece.
