A competitive social gathering inspired by the game of Mafia, where players use strategy and deception to build connections in a fun, interactive environment.
Liars & Friends returns to BOX Brindleyplace on Sunday 18 October for October Oaths, a competitive social gathering built around the game of Mafia. If you've seen the BBC show The Traitors, you'll recognise the setup: a room full of people, some of whom are lying to your face while you try to figure out who's who.
When you arrive, you're randomly assigned a role. You might be a scheming Mafia member, a resourceful Civilian with a special ability — like the Doctor, the Detective or the Swindler — or just a townsperson with keen instincts. The game works in a cycle of nights and days: at night, the Mafia secretly eliminate Civilians; by day, everyone debates and votes to 'lynch' a suspected player. Between rounds three and five, the Swindler gets to choose which side to back, which keeps things unpredictable even when you think you've got the room read. Games start every 15 minutes, so you can jump in whenever you're ready. You can play it as yourself or lean into a daring persona, and it works whether you turn up alone or bring a group.
Beyond the games, there's a bar area with refreshments and a minibar where you can relax and strategise between rounds, and you're welcome to bring your own drinks. The session is open to all ages, and it's filmed and photographed for promotional use, so keep that in mind if you're not keen on being on camera.
