Drop-in session at the 'EVERY THING MUST GO' exhibition, Joe Lycett's solo show of paintings about nostalgia, grief and loss inspired by objects from Birmingham's city collection.
Sharonjit Sutton is taking over a corner of the Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery on Thursday 29 October for Legends of Brum, a special drop-in session that lets you get stuck into the city's folklore alongside her. It's a workshop rather than a talk, so you'll be making things rather than just listening.
The session is part of Joe Lycett's EVERY THING MUST GO, his first major solo art exhibition. Lycett's paintings from the last year circle around nostalgia, grief and loss, and they take their cues from objects in Birmingham's city collection. There are dozens of pieces you won't have seen before — deceased celebrities, extinct animals, discontinued chocolate bars and destroyed buildings — all done in a tongue-in-cheek, childlike style. The bold salon-style display turns the gallery into what Lycett calls a 'neon graveyard', a distinctly Brummie take on memory and cultural change.

EVERY THING MUST GO opened in July 2026 and runs until 21 February 2027, so you've got plenty of time to see the rest of the show around the workshop. The Legends of Brum special is a drop-in session, which means no booking is required — you can just turn up when it suits you. It's suitable for all ages, so it works as a family thing or something to do on your own. The gallery is at Chamberlain Square, right in the heart of the city.
