Director's Cut of the anti-rockumentary King Rocker, introduced by Stewart Lee with a live onstage Q&A with Robert Lloyd, Stewart Lee and director Michael Cumming.
MAC Birmingham is screening the Director's Cut of King Rocker on Tuesday 20 October, with Stewart Lee introducing the film and a live Q&A to follow. The whole thing runs for about two hours, starting at 7:00pm, and the Q&A brings together Robert Lloyd, Stewart Lee, and the film's director, Michael Cumming.
King Rocker is an anti-rockumentary about Robert Lloyd, best known for fronting the cult Birmingham bands The Prefects and The Nightingales. He's a figure who's flown under the radar for more than four decades, and the film follows him as a Birmingham autodidact who's never quite been given his due. It weaves his story together with that of the city's forgotten public sculpture of King Kong, and it does so by steering clear of the usual celebrity interview and archive-raid approach. Instead, it's a free-associating bricolage that pulls in Indian food, bewildered chefs, vegetable gardening, prescription medicines, pop stardom and pop art. This Director's Cut expands the original by 30 minutes.
The night is built around the film and the people behind it. Stewart Lee introduces the screening, and afterwards Lloyd, Lee and Cumming take to the stage for the Q&A, so you'll get to hear from the subject, the comedian, and the director all in one go. It's a good chance to see the film in its longer form and then hear the three of them talk it through.
