Premiere screening of the West Midlands ghost-hunting mockumentary 'Celestial Intersect' with a live filmmaker Q&A at The Mockingbird Cinema.
The Mockingbird Cinema is screening Celestial Intersect on Friday 6 November, with a live Q&A to follow. It's a West Midlands production, an award-winning ghost-hunting mockumentary made by local independent filmmakers on a strict £0 budget. The film follows Richard De'Vaughn, a fame-obsessed ghost hunter trying to put together a pilot for his own paranormal investigation show in Worcester, where he tracks down real ghost stories and interviews real people.
In terms of tone, the filmmakers describe it as blending the awkward comedy of The Office with the real-world interactions of Borat and Ali G—so it's less about scripted jokes and more about the cringe of someone like De'Vaughn putting himself out there. That Borat-style approach carries into the interviews, too, which were conducted unscripted. It's a mockumentary that takes its ghosts seriously enough to go after real stories, but doesn't take its lead character seriously at all.
The screening comes fresh off the festival circuit, and the Q&A is the first time the creators are doing it live. They'll be talking through how they managed to shoot their first feature film without spending a penny, and how those unscripted interviews worked in practice. If you've ever wondered how a feature actually gets made when there's no budget behind it, that's the part they'll be breaking down.
