Screening of 'Community: Becoming Black & British - Birmingham' and short films, with live interviews, to celebrate Black British culture.
The World Reimagined brings Triangle of Unity to The Mockingbird Cinema on Thursday 29 October, with the night running from 6:00 to 11:00 PM. The main event is the premiere of Community: Becoming Black & British – Birmingham, directed by Ellis Meade. It's hosted by Rakeem Omar of BBC Radio 1Xtra and co-hosted by Black Heritage Walks Network, with short films curated by We Are Parable and live interviews with the filmmakers.
The film is part of a wider project, Community: Becoming Black & British, which captures and preserves the stories of Black communities across the country, bringing generations together to explore the people, places and organisations that have shaped Black British life. Each city gets its own film, shot by a local filmmaker: Ellis Meade in Birmingham, Adi Alfa in Liverpool and Euella Jackson in Bristol. The Birmingham premiere is one of those, so the stories on screen are rooted in the city's own heritage.
That project sits inside Triangle of Unity, an arts and culture festival launched by The World Reimagined, a charity that works on racial justice and amplifying marginalised voices through art, education and activism. They've billed the evening as 'A Night to Celebrate Black British Culture', and with the short films and live interviews, it's more of a full programme than a single screening.
