Improvisation workshop with Thomas Kelly that uses Lecoq pedagogy and mime to develop a physical vocabulary for character work.
Thomas Kelly is running a comedy workshop at MAC Birmingham on Saturday 7 November, starting at 2:00pm. It's called Finding Characters Physically, and it's an improv experience open to all levels, so you don't need to be an experienced performer to get involved. The session draws on Lecoq pedagogy and mime technique to help you work with your body and build a more sophisticated physical vocabulary, exploring how rhythm, emotion and character as mask enrich stage performance. You'll be asked to wear clothes you can move in, as the work is physical rather than just talking.
Kelly brings a fair bit of experience to the room. He studied theatre at Rhodes College and completed a two-year Jacques Lecoq-inspired physical theatre and devising course at the London International School for the Performing Arts. He spent eighteen years in Chicago, where he studied and performed with iO, the Annoyance, Second City and the Neofuturists, and he still performs live in the Holy F*ck Comedy Hour and with the award-winning improv ensemble Sand.
His screen credits run through a few different styles, too: Showtime's Work In Progress, NBC's Chicago Med, NBC's Shrink and Monuments, and the stop-motion short Sleepy Steve. He's represented by Paonessa Talent LLC.
