Intermediate-advanced improvisation workshop with Inbal Lori on how to play bigger-than-life, extreme characters, part of the Birmingham Improv Festival 2026.
Inbal Lori is running a comedy workshop at MAC Birmingham on Friday 6 November, part of the Birmingham Improv Festival 2026. It's a three-hour session, and the focus is on something most of us have probably done without thinking: playing it safe. Lori asks why so many improvisers default to 'normal' or 'neutral' characters, and spends the session working out how to play bigger-than-life, extreme characters in a way that still feels believable and focused. It's an intermediate-advanced session, so it's aimed at people who've already got some improv under their belt rather than complete beginners.
Lori brings a fair bit of range to the table. She's an actress, writer and improviser who has written and performed for television and theatre, picking up prizes and scholarships for her acting and writing along the way. In 2015 she moved to Berlin, and since then she's been teaching and performing all over the place — the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Colombia, Japan, Nigeria, China and across Europe. As of 2025, she's the artistic director of the Berlin Impro Festival, so she's spent the last few years running a whole festival around this stuff.

Beyond the stage, she also coaches companies like Spotify, Disney, EY, Doberman, McKinsey, Rolls-Royce and Sky Sports, which gives you a sense of how she works with different kinds of groups. The workshop itself is three hours long, and it's one of the sessions making up the Birmingham Improv Festival 2026, so there's plenty more going on around it if you're into improv. Tickets are £51.95.
