Film screening of the dark satire Digger, directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu and starring Tom Cruise.
Digger is coming to MAC Birmingham on Friday 23 October, with screenings running through to Wednesday 28 October. It's a dark satire from Alejandro G. Iñárritu, with Tom Cruise in the title role as Digger Rockwell, an oil tycoon who finds himself in a bit of a hole.
The story kicks off when an explosion on one of his platforms, caused by drilling and fracking, triggers an environmental disaster. Rather than just letting him sink, the US president charges him with a mission: repair the damage and present himself as the saviour of humanity. It's a strange place to start, and the whole thing is built around that gap between who Rockwell is and who he's being asked to pretend to be.
Iñárritu has commented that neither he nor Cruise had ever made anything like it, which gives you a fair idea of the territory they're stepping into. It's a far cry from the usual Cruise role, and seeing him play a character like Rockwell is probably the main draw here. The film runs 128 minutes and carries a CERT 15, so it's not one for the younger ones.
