A multi-sensory, inclusive dance show for families blending contemporary dance, live music, immersive sound and scents in a playful night-time adventure.
Dance in The Dark comes to MAC Birmingham on Saturday 24 October, with a second day of shows on Sunday 25 October. It's a family dance show co-created with children, and the whole thing is built around a starry night theme. The audience is invited to turn up in their favourite PJs and settle into a giant sleepover den, where spooky shadows and night-time sounds lead the way. It blends contemporary dance, live music, immersive sound and scents into a playful night-time adventure for families.
Accessibility is baked in from the start rather than bolted on. The relaxed performances cut the sound, let people come and go as they please, limit audience numbers and add a pre-booked Touch Tour, a 'meet the cast' introduction in the foyer and a time-out space. Companion tickets are free. There's also a Visual Story Guide you can download from The Sonrisa Arts website beforehand, which is a handy thing to have if you're taking children who like to know what's coming.
The company is led by Artistic Director Kath Kimber-McTiffen, and they make interactive dance and music for young children, families and older generations, with a particular focus on those who don't easily access the arts. That inclusive approach is exactly what the relaxed performances are for, so there's a version of the show that works for a lot of different needs.
