Workshop on creating theatre of sanctuary and developing sustainable practice, part of the BEDLAM 2026 arts and mental health festival.
MAC Birmingham hosts a workshop on creating theatre of sanctuary and developing sustainable practice on Saturday 7 November, as part of the BEDLAM 2026 festival. It's a session that sits right at the intersection of arts and mental health, and if you've spent any time around the city's creative scene, you'll know that's a conversation that's been gaining a lot of ground lately.
To get your bearings, BEDLAM is an Arts & Mental Health Partnership. It brings together artists, practitioners, communities and mental health professionals to look at where creativity and mental health overlap. The 2026 edition of the festival turns its attention specifically to artist wellbeing, and this workshop is one of the sessions that forms part of that programme. The focus here is on 'theatre of sanctuary' — the idea of the theatre as a safe space, and how to build a practice around that without burning yourself out in the process.
That second part, developing sustainable practice, is where the practical side comes in. It's not just about the work you put on stage, but how you sustain yourself as a maker over the long haul. If you're a practitioner, a community leader, or just someone who works in the arts, that's usually the bit that gets overlooked in the rush to get a show up. The session gives you some room to think about it properly.
