Opening party for the autumn exhibitions at MAC Birmingham, featuring talks and gallery openings including the Surreal Solihull show.
MAC Birmingham is throwing an opening party for its autumn exhibitions on Friday 23 October, with talks and the gallery rooms opening up for the season. It's the launch of a wider programme of shows running across the autumn, and the party is free to attend.
One of the main features is Surreal Solihull, which pays tribute to Emmy Bridgwater. She lived in Solihull in her final years, and her bold, uncanny visions helped shape British Surrealism. In her spirit, artists from across the West Midlands have made new work on the theme of the surreal: collaged bird lands, painted dreamscapes, and a magic mirror sculpture. It's a local response to a surrealist legacy, with the region's own makers stepping into the same strange territory Bridgwater once did.
The show is curated by art historian and author Ruth Millington. It was originally commissioned by Solihull Council with support from the West Midlands Combined Authority's Commonwealth Games Legacy Fund, and developed alongside The Mayor Gallery in London and the Emmy Bridgwater Estate. So while it's showing at MAC, it's got roots in Solihull and links to London, too.
