Stand-up show by Mark Thomas, one of the UK's alternative comics, marking 40 years at the mic.
Mark Thomas is at The Black Box on Sunday 18 October, with a new stand-up show that marks 40 years at the mic. He's billed as one of the UK's oldest surviving alternative comics, and this is a brand-new hour rather than a best-of. If you've followed him for a while, you'll know the stand-up is only one part of what he does.
Across four decades he's picked up eight awards for performing and four more for his human rights work. On screen, there were six series of The Mark Thomas Comedy Product and three Dispatches for Channel 4, and he fronted five series of The Manifesto on Radio 4. He's written six books and five play scripts, curated and authored two art exhibitions with the artist Tracey Moberly, and holds a Guinness World Record for staging 20 protests in 24 hours.
There's a lot of the non-stage stuff in there too: he walked 724km along the length of the Israel Wall in the West Bank, set up a comedy club in Palestine with Dr Sam Beale, sued the police and won three times, and campaigned for trade union recognition for cinema workers. Critics have called him a 'firebrand of a clown' (Clownster), 'one of Britain's greatest storytellers' (The Scotsman) and 'the most intelligent of the modern leftist stand-ups' (Theatre Cat).

It's a single-name bill, so it's just him up there. The show runs from 20:00 to 22:00 at The Black Box, 18-22 Hill Street, Belfast BT1 2LA, and tickets are £25.25.
