Three teams of improvisers perform one-off, completely improvised shows based on audience suggestions at The Black Box.
Turnstyle are bringing their improv night to The Black Box on Tuesday 27 October, with three different teams performing in a single evening. Each team puts on its own one-off show, built from audience suggestions, so the material will never be seen again. The night is aimed as much at improv regulars as at first-timers who want to find out what the form is all about.
If you've never seen improv, the basic idea is that nothing is scripted. The performers take suggestions from the crowd — a location, an object, a relationship — and build a scene or a whole show around them on the spot. Because there are three teams on one bill, you get three distinct takes on the same night, and since it's all made up as they go, no two shows ever end up the same way.
The Black Box is a well-known spot in the Cathedral Quarter, and it's been one of Belfast's most beloved venues since 2006. It's a multi-faceted space that stages live music, theatre, literature, comedy, film, visual art, circus and cabaret, and it can hold everything from a small poetry reading to a large gig. It's also one of the main venues for the Cathedral Quarter Arts Festival, the Belfast Film Festival and Open House Festival, and its cafe serves free music evenings alongside affordable Fair Trade coffee and snacks.
