Pop-up screening of 'Hermostasis', a film by Jayne Cherry and Alison Lowry about menopause and ageing, within the monthly Late Night Art programme.
Jayne Cherry and Alison Lowry are screening Hermostasis at the Golden Thread Gallery on Thursday 5 November, from 5pm to 8pm. It's a pop-up screening in the Lower Gallery, part of the Late Night Art programme.
Hermostasis is a work-in-progress film by Cherry and Lowry, who collaborate frequently. It looks at menopause, ageing and the cultural invisibility of older women, drawing on the myth of the Cailleach, a figure from Irish and Gaelic folklore. The work brings together the materiality of glass and the ephemerality of performance art, and centres on 450 glass sticks — the average number of menstrual cycles a woman experiences.
Cherry's own practice draws on the hands-on labour of the women who surrounded her, whom she saw using their hands as a form of survival. That focus on making by hand runs through the film, and the screening gives you a chance to see the work as it's still being developed.

It all falls under Late Night Art, which is a monthly after-hours event on the first Thursday of every month. On those nights, many of Belfast's galleries and studios stay open late, so you can wander through painting, sculpture, photography, illustration, craft, video and performance as a post-work social. Hermostasis is one of the stops on the circuit this month. The screening runs from 5pm to 8pm in the Lower Gallery at the Golden Thread Gallery.
