Talk by artist Bette A. and musician Brian Eno, via videolink, about their book 'What Art Does' at The MAC during the Belfast International Arts Festival.
Bette A. and Brian Eno are coming to The MAC on Sunday 1 November for a conversation about their book, What Art Does: An Unfinished Theory. It's part of the Belfast International Arts Festival, and the setup is a bit specific: Bette A. will be on stage in person, with Eno joining via videolink, and Alex Clark hosting the discussion. The whole thing runs for an hour, starting at 2:00pm.
The book they're talking about asks how art is made by all of us, how it builds communities, and how it transforms the way we imagine the future. It's a broad set of questions, and the talk is a chance to hear them work through the ideas behind it. David Shariatmadari at The Guardian called the book "a kind of joyous manifesto," which gives you a fair sense of the tone they're aiming for.
It's an odd pairing on paper, and that's part of the draw. Bette A. is a Dutch artist, novelist, and art school teacher, and a co-founder of the Heroines! Movement; her previous books include Rus Like Everyone Else and What's Mine. Brian Eno has spent five decades making music and visual art as a composer, producer, collaborator, and solo artist. He's also a founding member of EarthPercent, a trustee of Client Earth, and a co-founder of HardArt. They're coming from very different backgrounds to talk about the same thing.
