Talk by The Independent's chief international correspondent Bel Trew about her work and her new book on war reporting, part of the Belfast International Arts Festival.
Bel Trew will be at The MAC on Saturday 31 October, talking about her work as a foreign correspondent and her forthcoming book. It's part of the Belfast International Arts Festival, so it's one of the many things on across the city that month.
Trew is The Independent's multi-award-winning Chief International Correspondent, as well as a documentary filmmaker, commentator and photographer. She was born and raised in the Gulf and Eastern Europe, and since the Arab Spring began in 2011, she's covered some of the biggest conflicts and crises of the last fifteen years. Her work specialises in uncovering evidence of international law violations and the plight of civilians — from the disappeared in the Ukraine war to the deadly impact of aid cuts in sub-Saharan Africa. She's lived and worked across the world, from Cairo to Berlin, and was named Foreign Reporter of the Year at the UK Press Awards and won the Marie Colvin Award.
The talk is built around her new book, which she describes as reframing war reporting by telling the stories of crises and conflict through the eyes of the ordinary people forced to endure them. It's a shift in focus: rather than the high-level politics of war, she puts the people living through it at the centre. The conversation will touch on her reporting from the front lines and the stories she's gathered along the way.
