Puppet show by Doppelskope and Sandglass Theaters in which the Grimm family's steam-powered Story Machine malfunctions and they reimagine Grimm fairy tales with the audience's help.
The Amazing Story Machine opens at the Center for Puppetry Arts on March 24, 2027, and runs through April 4. It's a production by Doppelskope Theater, co-produced with Sandglass Theater, and it takes a familiar set of stories and turns them on their head.
The plot follows the Grimm family and their Story Machine, a steam-powered contraption that does exactly what the name suggests—until it breaks. When the machine malfunctions, the family has to find new ways to tell stories, and they do it with the audience's help. Along the way, they reimagine Grimm fairy tales you've likely heard before: The Hare and the Hedgehog, Hansel and Gretel, and The Brave Little Tailor.
It's a 60-minute show, recommended for ages 4 and up, so it works as a family outing. One of the best parts is that your ticket includes admission to the museum, which is a whole other experience. The Center for Puppetry Arts is the largest nonprofit in the U.S. dedicated solely to puppetry, and it houses the Jim Henson Collection—original Muppets, Fraggle Rock characters, Sesame Street icons, and more than 4,000 puppets in total. Smithsonian Magazine named it one of only three sites in Georgia among its 250 Places to Celebrate America.
