Exhibitions on view at the Center for Puppetry Arts, including the Jim Henson Collection, the Global Collection and 'Frame by Frame: The Art of Stop-Motion Animation'.
The Center for Puppetry Arts in Midtown has its exhibitions on view this Tuesday, October 27, and if you've never been, it's a good day to finally walk through the doors. It's not just a museum—it's a theater and an education center, which explains why the place does so many different things at once. On any given day, they're staging wildly creative puppet plays for mature audiences alongside kid-lit adaptations for all ages, so it's one of the few spots in the city that works as well for a date as it does for a family outing.
Right now, the museum side is holding three collections at once. You've got the Jim Henson Collection, which is the big draw most people come for, and the Global Collection, which pulls puppetry from all over the map. Then there's Frame by Frame: The Art of Stop-Motion Animation, which has earned a Critic's Pick. Between the three, you can see the Muppets' legacy, how puppetry works in different cultures, and the painstaking process of stop-motion animation all in one trip. If you're into the craft of how things are actually made, Frame by Frame is the one to spend the most time with.
Beyond the exhibits, the Center keeps a pretty active schedule. They run the Puckin' Fuppet Show, which they bill as Atlanta's only adult open-mic puppet slam—it's exactly what it sounds like, and it offers an Audience Choice cash prize for the best act of the night. So while the museum side is all about the history and the art, the theater side still makes room for the weird, live stuff.

The exhibitions are included with regular admission, which is $16.50. The Center is open Tuesday through Thursday and Friday through Saturday from 9 AM to 5 PM, and Sunday from 12 PM to 5 PM—just keep in mind it's closed on Mondays. You'll find them at 1404 Spring St NW in Midtown.
