Spooky-season puppet show for adults in which seven phantoms play instruments, sing, dance and act with marionettes, shadow and hand puppets.
The Ghastly Dreadfuls are back at the Center for Puppetry Arts (1404 Spring St. NW at 18th St.) for their annual spooky-season run, which opens on October 7 and goes through October 31. It's an adults-only show, so keep that in mind if you're planning a family outing.
The ensemble describes itself as a deadly group of musicians, dancers, and puppeteers who rise from the dead to lead audiences through a world beyond the mortal plane with creepy stories, frightful songs, and devilish dances. Seven phantoms handle the music, singing, dancing, and acting, and they work with marionettes, shadow puppets, and hand, rod, and tabletop puppets. Among the highlights is the fan favorite The 11:59, based on a Patricia C. McKissack short story about a former Pullman porter who hears the whistle of an infamous ghost train, and a graveyard dance set to Saint-Saëns' Danse Macabre. This run marks the company's 20th engagement at the venue.
