Free exhibition of street and documentary photography, juried by Karen Marshall, at the Atlanta Photography Group.
In The Places We Belong opens at the Atlanta Photography Group on November 10, running through December 11. It's a group exhibition focused on street and documentary photography, and the opening reception is Thursday, November 12, from 7 to 9 PM. The show takes over the Main Gallery, and admission is free and open to the public.
There's a long list of photographers in the mix: Alex Ladd, Calvin Tigre, Chris Maliwat, Christopher Jarrett, Colin Potts, Debra Barnhart, Eric Burkard, Geoving Gerard, Ian McFarlane, Joe Hoyle, Jonathan Hillyer, Lee Beasley, Lisa Miller, Lisa Reisman, Louis Leon, Lynne Breitfeller, Marla Puziss, Meaghen Flynn, Nina Antonette Jao, RA Cobb, Ryan Jensen, Steve Traves, and Tabius McCoy. The work was juried by Karen Marshall, a New York photographer who spends her time documenting social issues with a focus on the psychological lives of her subjects. Her project Between Girls followed a group of urban middle-class teenagers from high school into adulthood over some 30 years and was published by Kehrer Verlag in 2021. She's also documented Navajo communities in Caretakers of the Earth: Navajo Resistance and Relocation and her Pennsylvania Dutch in-laws in Pennsylvania In-Laws.
Marshall chairs the Documentary Practice and Visual Journalism Program at the International Center of Photography, where she's taught for over 20 years, and she's an adjunct professor at New York University. Her work has been shown in the US, the Philippines, British Columbia, Israel, Colombia, and China, and has appeared in The Washington Post, CNN, Vanity Fair, and NPR. The Atlanta Photography Group itself dates back to 1987, when it was founded as an artist-initiated 501(c)(3) nonprofit membership organization supporting the city's fine art photography community; its gallery shows are juried by curators, gallery owners, and experts.
