Class on how to attract more birds to your garden by providing food, water and shelter, taught by Dante DeStefano.
Gardening for Birds is at the Atlanta Botanical Garden on Saturday, October 17, from 10 AM to 12 PM. It's a two-hour class led by Dante DeStefano, the garden's assistant exhibit horticulturist, and it's built around one simple goal: getting more birds to visit your yard.
If you've spent time in a garden and wondered why the birds seem to prefer your neighbor's place, this is where you'll find the answer. DeStefano focuses on the three things birds actually look for when deciding where to settleβfood, water, and shelter. The class goes through how to provide each one, from the types of plants that produce the seeds and berries they want, to the kind of water sources that keep them coming back, to the cover they need to feel safe from predators. It's not just about putting out a feeder; it's about thinking about your garden as a habitat.
Beyond the planting, there's a good bit of birdwatching woven in. The class is aimed at gardeners who want to enjoy watching birds throughout the seasons, so you'll get a sense of who's visiting when and what they're looking for at different times of the year. It's part of the Botanical Garden's adults programming and classes for autumn 2026, so it's geared toward people who already have a garden or are planning to start one.
