Free cooking demo by chef Pamela D. Jones Mack, who shares simple Gullah Geechee recipes with seasonal fruits, vegetables and herbs in the Edible Garden Outdoor Kitchen.
Pamela D. Jones Mack is taking over the Edible Garden Outdoor Kitchen at the Atlanta Botanical Garden on Sunday, October 25, for a Garden Chef demo. It's part of the Garden's Atlanta Food programming, where chefs lead visitors through a seasonal recipe right in the middle of the garden. Mack's demos center on seasonal fruits, vegetables, and herbs, and the recipes she works with are rooted in her Gullah Geechee heritage.
That heritage is where her cooking comes from. She was born and raised in Cross, South Carolina, in the Gullah region, and has loved cooking since she was a kid. After graduating from Morris College with a degree in business administration, she moved to Atlanta, where she's lived for 26 years. She started her own catering business, Taste of Satira, and named it after her great-grandmother, Satira Gethers, who taught her Gullah cuisine. Beyond catering, she's a spice provisioner of Gullah spice blends, and her work earned Best in Food at Garden & Gun's Made in the South Awards in 2019.
If you're not familiar with the format, the Atlanta Food series is built around the Edible Garden Outdoor Kitchen, an open-air space where chefs teach visitors how to prepare a seasonal recipe using the kinds of things growing around them. Mack's session fits right into that: she'll be working with seasonal produce and herbs, keeping the recipes simple and tied back to the Gullah Geechee traditions she grew up with.
