Exhibition exploring the art of stop-motion animation with original puppets, sets and production materials from works including Adventure Time, Anomalisa and Corpse Bride.
Frame by Frame: The Art of Stop-Motion Animation is running at the Center for Puppetry Arts through December 27, 2026. It's an exhibition that takes you behind the camera and into the world of stop-motion, one of those forms of visual storytelling that feels like magic when you don't know how it's made. The show is built around the original puppets, sets, and production materials gathered from stop-motion works from all over the world, and it's suitable for all ages.
The lineup of work on display covers a lot of ground. You'll find puppets and materials from Adventure Time, Anomalisa, Con Fuerza, Corpse Bride, Elf: Buddy's Musical Christmas, Fantastic Mr. Fox, Frankenweenie, Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio, Inkwo for When the Starving Return, James and the Giant Peach, Les Bêtes, Moral Orel, Paper Daughter, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Ruff Ruff Danger Dogs, SpongeBob, and Tumble Leaf. It's a wide mix of styles—from the stop-motion we grew up with to more recent work—and seeing the actual puppets and sets next to each other gives you a real sense of how different artists approach the same medium.
Beyond the puppets themselves, the exhibition is designed to show how the process actually works. There are immersive displays, hands-on elements, and behind-the-scenes insights that open up the craft to the public, so you can see how artists bring inanimate materials to life one meticulous movement at a time. If you're already there, you can also explore the Center's Jim Henson collection and the 'Everybody loves Pirates' collection.
