Exhibitions at the Center for Puppetry Arts, including the Jim Henson Collection, Global Collection and Frame by Frame: The Art of Stop-Motion Animation.
The Center for Puppetry Arts in Midtown Atlanta is open for its exhibitions on Saturdays, with the next date coming up this Saturday, October 17, at 10 AM. It's a theater, museum, and education center all in one, and the exhibitions are just one part of what's going on inside.
Inside, you'll find three distinct collections to walk through. The Jim Henson Collection is the big draw, bringing together the work of the man who gave us the Muppets. Alongside it is the Global Collection, which looks at puppetry from around the world, and Frame by Frame: The Art of Stop-Motion Animation, a deep dive into the painstaking process of animating frame by frame. You can explore the permanent collections and the rotating exhibitions in one visit, so it's a good spot to spend a few hours if you're into the craft.
Beyond the museum side, the Center is a working theater and school. It stages puppet plays for mature audiences and kid-lit adaptations for all ages, and it runs the Hand and Rod puppetry classes—the intermediate course that builds on the foundational skills of Hand and Rod Puppetry 101. The social calendar runs the full range, from the Halloween Puckin' Fuppet Show, Atlanta's only adult open-mic puppet slam with an Audience Choice cash prize, to the Monster Mash, the Center's annual Halloween dance party in the Love Family Atrium.
