Lucia August blends dance and spoken word to share queer stories from her life, as part of the Aberdeen Queer Arts Festival 2026.
Lucia August brings Tales From Your Queer Elder to Lemon Tree on Saturday 7 November, as part of the Aberdeen Queer Arts Festival 2026. It's a matinee, starting at 2:00pm, and tickets are £13.20.
August is a vibrant 70-something, plus-size lesbian artist who's been living proudly out of the closet for about 52 years. The show blends dance with spoken word, and she draws on those decades of real-life experience to share intimate, queer-centred stories. It's a performance that sits at the intersection of movement and storytelling, with the dance and the words working together rather than one just accompanying the other.
The show is part of the Aberdeen Queer Arts Festival, a four-day celebration of the LGBTQ+ community in Aberdeen and beyond. This year's edition is dedicated to queer creativity, presented as a showcase of outstanding artistry and a platform for queer brilliance. It's the first festival of its kind for Aberdeen Performing Arts, bringing together cabaret, comedy, music, panel discussions, workshops and a community open stage. The festival welcomes allies and friends, and consciously uses the word 'queer' as part of a positive reclamation of the term.
