National Theatre of Scotland production of Muriel Spark's novel, adapted by David Harrower and directed by Vicky Featherstone, with Gayle Rankin as Miss Jean Brodie.
The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie comes to His Majesty's Theatre for a short run from Thursday 29 to Saturday 31 October. It's a National Theatre of Scotland production, adapted by David Harrower from Muriel Spark's novel and directed by Vicky Featherstone, brought to Aberdeen in partnership with The Royal Lyceum Theatre Edinburgh and in association with Pitlochry Festival Theatre.
The story is set at Edinburgh's Marcia Blaine School for Girls and centres on Miss Jean Brodie, a charismatic but dangerous junior-school teacher. Every year she picks her 'set' — the crème de la crème of her pupils, whom she moulds through art, politics and stories of sexual liberation, demanding their utter loyalty in return. Witty, seductive and full of contradictions, she has a habit of inventing her own truths and manipulating her girls, and that eventually leads her to risk everything. Harrower's adaptation sharpens the knives of Spark's novel, and the production is staged by the National Theatre of Scotland.
Gayle Rankin leads the cast as Miss Jean Brodie, with Maureen Beattie as Miss Mackay. Rankin is a star of New York theatre, nominated to the Tony for Sally Bowles in Cabaret, and known as Sheila 'the She-Wolf' in Netflix's Glow. The show runs about three hours including an interval and is recommended for ages 14 and over, with scenes of a sexual nature and partial nudity.
