Percussion theatre piece 'Try Try Try' by composer Neil Tòmas Smith and director Eszter Marsalko, part of the sound_festival programme.
Neil Tòmas Smith brings Try Try Try to The Lemon Tree on Thursday 22 October, a percussion theatre piece that opens the sound_festival programme running from 22 to 31 October. Smith composed the work and director Eszter Marsalko staged it, and on the night three percussionists — Darren Gallacher, Joe White and Gloria Yehilevsky — take the stage.
It's a piece about effort in a hostile world, and Smith takes his inspiration from the late theatre of Samuel Beckett. Three figures are pushed to their limits as they strive to meet imposed demands, with rhythm and gesture forming relationships, creating tasks and sparking conflict on stage. The whole thing is grounded in the limits and potential of the human body, so it asks for a certain virtuosity in performance and leaves room for more than a hint of humour. It combines percussion, theatre and storytelling to look at the human capacity to keep trying against all odds.
Try Try Try was co-commissioned by sound_festival and funded by Creative Scotland, the Hope Scott Trust and the PRS Foundation. It's the first of the festival's events, which run through to 31 October across the city.
