The fifth edition of the Eastern European film festival, with screenings of 'Rave', 'Fragments of Ice' and 'And Then We Danced' at The Belmont Cinema.
Samizdat: Eastern European Film Festival returns to The Belmont Cinema at Aberdeen Art Gallery on Saturday 7 November, running from 1pm to 8:35pm. The day's programme brings together three films: Rave (Łukasz Ronduda & Dawid Nickel, 2024), Fragments of Ice / Фрагменти льоду (Maria Stoianova, 2024), and And Then We Danced (Levan Akin, 2019).
Samizdat takes its name from the clandestine dissemination of censored and forbidden texts in communist states, and the festival works in a similar spirit, bringing cinema from Eastern and Central Europe, the Caucasus and Central Asia to Scottish audiences. This is its fifth edition, a milestone the festival marks with a Shorts Collection framed as an exercise in collective retrospection and introspection, and a birthday club night with Half Past Now that carries the programme beyond the screen. A special strand, 'Re-membering the Archive', gathers documentaries that work with home videos, photographs and commercials as a form of temporal repair, and the festival also runs a short-film competition judged by Borscht Film.
