Poet Brian Bilston brings an evening of comedy on reading, writing and enjoying poetry, based on his new book.
Brian Bilston is coming to The Lemon Tree on Friday 23 October, with his new show How to Lay an Egg with a Horse Inside. He's one of the UK's most popular poets, with over 500,000 followers on social media and a long run of sell-out shows across the country. This is his latest tour, and the title comes from his newest book.
Bilston has a knack for the funny side of poetry, and this evening is built around it. He'll be walking the audience through the hows, whys and whats of reading, writing and enjoying poetry every day, and he's described it as an evening of comedy. It's not just about the new material, either. He's published several bestselling collections, including You Took the Last Bus Home, Alexa, what is there to know about love? and Days Like These, and his novel Diary of a Somebody was shortlisted for the Costa First Novel Award. He's also written poetry for younger readers, so his work reaches a fair few different audiences.
Last year he stepped into music, releasing Sounds Made by Humans in 2025, an album of his poetry set to music with The Catenary Wires. This autumn he's back on stage with the new book, How to Lay an Egg with a Horse Inside, and the show runs about an hour and 50 minutes including an interval. It's unreserved seating, and it's for over-14s only because of the swearing.
