A concert celebrating three of J.S. Bach's festive masterpieces: the Easter and Ascension Oratorios and the Magnificat in D, performed by the Yorkshire Bach Choir and Yorkshire Baroque Soloists.
The Yorkshire Bach Choir and Yorkshire Baroque Soloists are taking over the Sir Jack Lyons Concert Hall on Saturday 20 March 2027, with a programme built around three of JS Bach's festive masterpieces. It's part of the York Concert 2026/27 season, and the whole evening is dedicated to the composer's more celebratory, large-scale choral writing.
The set brings together the Easter Oratorio (BWV 249), the Ascension Oratorio (Lobet Gott in seinen Reichen, BWV 11), and the Magnificat in D (BWV 243). The two oratorios are known for their trumpet-led choruses and bright orchestral colours, while the Magnificat is a choral work of radiant writing and demanding solos, written to capture the joy of the Virgin Mary. Together, they make for a substantial evening of Bach's most exuberant music.
To pull it off, the Yorkshire Baroque Soloists assemble a full festival orchestra: trumpets, timpani, flutes, oboes, strings and continuo, with the choir and a set of soloists on top. Peter Seymour conducts. It's a big sound for a single hall, and the programme lets you hear how Bach used those trumpets and timpani to give these pieces their festive weight.
