The Alice Project brings Platform 4 to Theatre@41 in York on Wednesday 7 October. It's a sonic journey through Wonderland, and the title is a nod to the railway platform that starts the whole trip.
What you'll hear is a blend of music, text and voices from 40 contemporary Alices. The project takes the familiar territory of Lewis Carroll's story and looks at it through 40 different lenses, with each voice adding its own take on the character and the world she wanders into. It's not just a reading or a performance in the usual sense; the music and the spoken word run together, so the text and the sound carry the story forward side by side.
Having 40 different perspectives on one character gives the whole thing a particular kind of reach. Rather than a single interpretation of Alice, you get a collage of voices, each bringing something different to the table. The music does the same, weaving around the text and the voices to build the atmosphere of Wonderland as it unfolds.
