Paul Lewis

Paul Lewis brings his piano recital to Sir Jack Lyons Concert Hall on Wednesday 6 October 2027, starting at 7.30pm. It's part of the bicentenary of Beethoven's death, and the programme pairs two of the composer's groundbreaking sonatas with two by Mozart, set in the relative major and minor of their Beethoven counterparts.

On the Beethoven side, there's the Waldstein Sonata, op. 53, composed around the same time as the Eroica Symphony; it helped move the piano sonata from the salon into the concert hall. Then there's the final Piano Sonata, op. 111, written as Beethoven grew completely deaf. It's an unusual two-movement structure that moves from the dark struggle of the C-minor first movement to the transcendent peace of the C-major second. The Mozart pieces are the Sonata no. 8 in A minor, K. 310, and the Sonata no. 4 in E-flat, K. 282.

Lewis is internationally regarded as one of the leading musicians of his generation, and his award-winning cycle of Beethoven's piano sonatas has received unanimous critical and public acclaim. He's won the Royal Philharmonic Society's Instrumentalist of the Year, two Edison Awards, three Gramophone Awards and the Diapason d'or.
